Curacao Dolphin Academy in ProHD
Located at the Curaçao Sea Aquarium in Curaçao, one of the Netherlands Antilles in the Southern Caribbean Sea, the Curacao Dolphin Academy provides educational activities
for visitors who wish to observe and interact with trained bottlenose dolphins. The Curacao Dolphin Academy recently purchased four JVC GY-HM100 camcorders to use for general
publicity and to film visitors who swim with the dolphins.
“I started as video-operator/photographer at a rehabilitation
centre, then started my own company in 1995 until 2005. After that I moved to Curacao in and started working at Dolphin Academy,” Ferdinand Rink, Operational Manager at Dolphin
Academy Curacao explains. “In 2008 I began a new company, Footage BV, which is a Management Consultancy which specialises in multimedia, plus I also continue to work at Dolphin
Academy as Operational Manager.”
The Curacao Dolphin Academy’s aquarium, which has both enclosures and the open sea facilities, is located between Aruba, Bonaire and
the South American Continent. The GY-HM100’s solid state format is perfect in such a versatile environment and is used on a daily basis.
“Here at Curacao we needed cameras that could stand the
heat, the salty environment and being used as a workhorse. For a reasonable price you get HD with 25/30 and 50/60 frames, .MOV and MP4 and Phantom power,” Ferdinand continues.
“Also the camera includes a lot of adjustments you normally find and more expensive cameras.
“We use the cameras three to six times a day for periods up to 40 to 60 minutes. We film our Open Water Dolphin Dive program, Free Dive program and our Dolphin Swim program. For
underwater we use the JVC Everio - which shoots great colours - with an Ikelite housing, and the GY-HM100 we use for everything above the water. We use Adobe Premiere and FCP for
editing and we also use the GY-HM100 for usual stuff like commercials, info clips etc.”
The academy aims to
re-educate visitors about dolphins and emphasises the importance of protecting the species and their goal is to, ‘Teach people about dolphins and to share the fun of interacting
with these wonderful animals’.
