Exeter College choose JVC GM-F monitors and GY-HD251 studio camera

Exeter College has recently purchased three JVC GY-HD251 studio cameras from GV Multimedia, along with three large GM-F Series LCD monitors, for use in its TV Studio. The college, first established as a tertiary college in 1970, has since built a reputation as a centre of learning excellence, and the new professional studio system will form an integral part of its curriculum.

Senior Curriculum Support Advisor, Atila Mustafa, explains why the college chose JVC. “Value for money and good after-sales support are essential elements in our search for kit that's reliable, relevant and able to last the duration.”

“At present we feel that JVC offers ideal products for the small studio market. The JVC cameras with studio adapters are a brilliant invention; we may not ever use them as OB or location cameras, but it's nice to know that the option is there. Complete with the CCU and monitors, JVC delivered a well-rounded package.”D

The JVC GY-HD251E studio camera provides an affordable and intelligent upgrade to full HD capability, making it ideal for both studio and ENG applications. With full-raster progressive HD imaging and HD/SD SDI output in both 720p and 1080i, the GY-HD251E delivers outstanding high definition performance, while providing a backward compatible design that lets you connect to your existing system with no need for cable or other upgrades. It offers an economical HD or SD studio system, suitable for a wide range of applications, including sports, concerts and other events.

“Since I came to the college six years ago, we've had many equipment donations from regional broadcasters and charities, which has helped upgrade our TV Studio,” Atila continues.

“Christmas 2009 marked the end of our old SD studio, as we installed the new HD studio over the Christmas break. Being an ex-BBC and ITV employee, I had got very used to the world of SD in 4:3 and so to mark the landmark occasion, we broadcast a final programme in SD. The next morning, I packed the old JVC KM3000 vision mixer away. What a solid and beautiful mixer it was too, serving us well for over 15 years. That's why we decided to purchase JVC kit again.”

Exeter College currently offer BTEC courses in Media Production and Foundation Degree courses in TV Production, Creative Digital Video & Journalism and Practical Media. The courses all make excellent use of the TV Studio, which has been at the college for 20 years.

“Typically, students will create content for a news bulletin, talk show or magazine programme. A lot of the footage we shoot is against a green screen, generating virtual environments for presenters to stand in front of. We tend to shoot in 1080i through our vision mixer. From here, the programme is captured on to a raid array via Final Cut Pro. This makes post production simple and instantaneous. A lot of our content ends up on DVD or on the college portal, where users can view the final output from home or from within the college.”

Atila concludes: “The cameras are big enough to look professional and offer the studio functionality that many manufacturers don't seem to want to offer for the JVC price margin. The students love the picture quality and usability and really enjoy working in the studio.”
