City and Islington Sixth Form College
City and Islington Sixth Form College prides itself on teaching excellence and was recently awarded the Queen’s
Anniversary Prize in recognition of its continued progress and development. The college has just purchased 15 GY-HM100 camcorders as part of the continuing development of its Media Department.
“The department has over 400 students
studying A-Level Media and Film,” Michael Maniloff, Senior Media Technician at the college, comments. “We have intensive periods of filming and produce over 100
short films each year. Our existing cameras were nearing the end of their lives, so we spent a considerable amount of time researching the latest camera equipment from all the major
manufacturers. We decided to go tapeless because of the continuing FireWire and tape problems we were incurring – and that, along with our budget, narrowed the field down.
Eventually we decided on the JVC GY-HM100 because of its compatibility with Final Cut Pro™ and its ease of use. We purchased fifteen back in September, from
PEC Video, and so far they have been very reliable and popular with both staff and students”, Michael enthused.
“The ability to record directly to SDHC cards has been a major bonus, as is the facility to download footage straight from the card to our hard drives, freeing up the cameras for other students to use. The camcorder is really easy to get to grips with; we felt it was essential that our inexperienced students could use the ‘auto’ function and get excellent results, while our more proficient students had the facility to experiment. The GY-HM100 had both key points.”
